Impact refers to the lived effect of our action as it arrives within an Other, the relational reverberation through which what we have done becomes something that is felt, sensed, perceived, and interpreted beyond us. It is what happens in the space between, an ever-emerging reality that carries its own truth within the experience of the one who receives it.
Impact belongs to the relational, and so it exists apart from the intention that preceded it. It moves through the Other’s sensation, through their perception of Self, Other, and World, and through the meanings their system has come to carry. What lands is therefore shaped by our action alongside the whole relational and developmental history that receives it, which is why the same action may arrive with tenderness in one relationship and with alarm in another.
Across development, our capacity to know our impact emerges through co-regulated connection. Within a “good-enough” holding environment, an attuned Other reflects back what has landed, allowing the developing Self to sense the reverberation of its own action while remaining connected and steady. Through repeated experiences of impact being named while belonging remains, the Self comes to know that effect can be witnessed, metabolised, and repaired. Where impact has been met with humiliation, banishment, or relational threat, protective patterns may mobilise to guard against exposure, and impact may become something to defend against, to explain away, or to disappear from.
Impact may be intended and it may be accidental, and its weight within the Other is real in both. It may be immediate, arriving in a shift of breath, tone, or gaze, and it may be cumulative, gathering across time as a residue that shapes what is anticipated next.
Impact may therefore be understood as the relational effect of our authored action as it is lived within an Other. Where impact can be received with steadiness and curiosity, repair becomes possible, allowing connection, continuity, and contextual coherence to remain available within Self, Other, and the World around us.
