A lot of people come into this work confused about why things are still feeling so hard.

They’ve read the books, unpacked their childhood and understand their attachment history.

And yet certain moments still hit them deep because what’s often missing from the conversation is that their body didn’t stop learning after childhood.

Adult trauma such as betrayal, emotional neglect, chronic invalidation, unsafe, dynamics, long-term stress - are what shape your sense of safety just as powerfully as early experiences do. Sometimes more so.

That doesn’t erase where things began. But it does explain why healing can’t stop there.

When clients of mine realize this, something shifts.
They stop assuming they’ve “missed something” or failed at healing.
They start understanding that their nervous system adapted across multiple chapters of their life - and each one deserves to be acknowledged fully.

Honoring the full story of what your body has had to survive is necessary and what brings real clarity to your healing process.🤍

The sun doesn’t need a response.
The ocean doesn’t rush you.
The trees don’t judge how long it’s taking.

And for a moment, you remember what it feels like to exist without performing.
To be part of the world instead of carrying it.

This isn’t about dismissing practices that create nervous system regulation. I do that. I teach that from time to time. I have benefited from that a lot.

It’s about refusing to let embodiment become one more thing women have to perfect in order to cope with conditions that shouldn’t exist.

Your body isn’t failing to regulate.

Your body is accurately tracking a world that keeps asking you to swallow what shouldn’t be swallowed.

Both can be true: the tools matter AND the problem isn’t your inability to use them.

January sadness is often misunderstood because it is not reactive. It does not announce itself as grief or loss. It’s hard to identify. It settles instead as a dull recognition.

A recognition that what you carried over the holidays didn’t change the structure of your day to day life. That effort did not transform the dynamic. That love did not redeem the cost. That Christmas magic (when cast through adaptation) only lasts so long.

Psychodynamically, this sadness marks the end of denial and endurance.

Endurance is one of the most socially rewarded defences. It looks like resilience and strength and for a long time, it works. We see this often in parentified daughters who hold onto the idea that if they do everything, fix everything, manage everything eventually they will be rewarded.

But every defence has a price and January is often when the psyche presents the bill.

What dissolves here is false hope. The hope that if you keep giving, it will eventually give back. The hope that if you stay patient, it will finally become different. The hope that if you hold it together, someone else will notice and take over. The hope that some intervening factor or person will change everything for the better.

This is why the sadness feels heavy rather than sharp. It is the grief of realisation.

This sadness is developmental.

It appears at the precise moment when illusion has lost its usefulness. When the psyche is no longer willing to trade aliveness for stability. When something inside you knows it cannot continue without diluting the self.

This is why the sadness holds the seed of transformation. You don’t have to push through, carry more, try harder, but if you can, you need to stay with it.

January shows you what is over. It tells you where you have been disappearing. It tells you which bargains are no longer survivable.

The harshness of midwinter is that January asks you to see clearly.

And clarity, though quiet, is the beginning of every real change.

Sometimes rest is not about stopping, but about being met.

About a moment where you are not required to hold everything together, or move any further ahead.

If today feels full or fast, perhaps there is a small invitation here: To move a little more softly within the pace of your life.

To find space to rest, even briefly, and notice what is easing alongside what is pressing.

Relational rest often arrives quietly in the slow moments of noticing.

In moments small and moments true.

In the simple experience of being alongside something kind, and allowing warmth and care to find you.

For a long time, we’ve treated self-regulation like a solo skill. Something you should be able to do on your own if you just have enough insight or tools.

The science tells a different story.

Self-regulation matters. And it’s built through experience, not willpower. Our nervous systems learn how to settle, recover, and stay present through safe relationships first, and then we internalize that capacity over time.

This isn’t about dependence or needing someone all the time. It’s about how regulation actually develops in the brain and body, especially after trauma.

Co-regulation is not a weakness. It’s the pathway through which real self-regulation is formed.

We tend to think change fails because we lack discipline, clarity, courage, or follow through. But what collapses at the edge of change is seldom motivation. What collapses is an arrangement that once kept us psychologically alive.

Beginnings threaten more than habits. They threaten attachments, identities, and long held hopes about how effort would one day be met.

For many people, staying stuck preserves an unspoken fantasy that someone will notice, intervene, soften the load, or finally make it easier (often because these needs weren’t met in childhood, when someone should have been there.)

To begin is often to grieve that this rescue is not coming. That grief is reality finally registering. It can feel devastating.

This is why resistance intensifies precisely when something meaningful approaches. Far from sabotaging the future, the psyche is guarding what has not yet been mourned. When that guarding is recognised, something changes.

Change doesn’t need force, or biblical levels of willpower - it asks for honesty about what must be left behind in order to move forward.

And that is never a small reckoning, but it is a magical one.

The moment you recognize that not everyone has the capacity to meet you with the same awareness you bring, the pressure drops. You stop trying to convince. You stop trying to guide someone into a level of understanding they have not chosen for themselves.

People interpret through their own history, their bias, their fears, and their level of emotional development. That has nothing to do with your effort or your sincerity. And once you see that clearly, you protect your energy differently. You express what’s true for you, and you let go of the desire to manage someone else’s perspective.

This doesn’t make you cold. It makes you grounded. It frees you from the exhausting cycle of trying to be understood by someone who is committed to their own narrative. Your peace grows when you stop negotiating your truth and start honoring the limits of someone else’s perception.

Some connections deepen when clarity is shared. Others fade when clarity is offered. Both outcomes are alignment.

A transition between years is a threshold. And so is any real transformational journey.

It’s the passage from sourcing your identity, worth, and sense of self from survival… into sourcing them from self-connection.

Thresholds are uncomfortable by nature. They ask us to step into the unknown. To question what we’ve taken for granted. To loosen what no longer works. To be brave, patient, and honest with ourselves in ways we haven’t been before.

This in-between space can feel disorienting, tender, even lonely at times.

Thresholds don’t ask for fixing or forcing. They ask for clarity and attunement. For allowing your body to recalibrate its sense of safety at its own rhythm.

You’re not meant to rush this crossing. You’re meant to hold yourself through it.

So let 2026 be the year you begin or continue to embody your personal threshold. A year where you gently transition...

• From pressure to change quickly into permission to exist.

• From analyzing your patterns to meeting yourself more fully.

• From intellectual understanding into lived, embodied connection, especially with your traumatized body.

• From bracing against feeling into feeling safer with emotional complexity.

• From knowing yourself only through survival to discovering who you are beyond wounds and conditioning.

• From over-identification into a growing capacity to hold multiple perspectives and expressions of yourself.

• From trying to control what’s outside your experience to recognizing and accepting what you cannot control.

May this be the year when life increasingly reflects your uniqueness, embodied connection, clarity, and choice.

This is for the over-functioners, caretakers, perfectionists, intellectualizers, scapegoats, comedians, golden children, & anyone else who has been pigeon-holed into a role for most of your life.

Many people learned to identify with a role; it’s how you felt seen, safe, productive, in control, connected, & worthy.

But you aren’t just a role, or a set of behaviors — you are whole, complex human being.
You’re allowed to rest, feel, receive, make mistakes, be vulnerable, & let other people be responsible for their feelings, decisions, & behaviors.

Your existence, safety, and connection to others is not dependent on your ability to maintain this role.

And when you start down the path of healing and begin to meet more of yourself, it feels absolutely terrifying to start showing up differently.

To break the momentum of the old pattern — to feel someone else notice the shift, that you aren’t going to respond in the way that have always expected you to.

It’s normal to freak out a little.

This truly is some of the hardest parts of this work, this discomfort. It can feel all-consuming (survival!).

When the old relational contract says that your smarts, “kindness,” problem-solving ability, wit, strength, or self-abandonment is what has always kept you connected, then trying out a new behavior will bring up all of those protective parts — self-judgment, anxiety, fear, shame, guilt.

The work isn’t not to feel uncomfortable, it’s to practice the new pattern while staying connected to yourself.

Sometimes the hardest part is not the feeling itself, it’s the performance. The smiling. The “I’m fine.” The way you swallow the truth because you don’t want to make things awkward or be the one who’s “still not over it.”

Sadness is not the problem here. The problem is the pressure to hide it. The pressure to be the strong one, the funny one, the one who has “done the work” and now only feels “positive vibes.”

You don’t have to rush your way out of this. You get to be a work in progress and still be worthy.

Many people describe a quiet sense of emptiness or the feeling that something is missing, even after years of personal growth, therapy, or spiritual work. From a shamanic and somatic perspective, this experience is often linked to soul loss or soul fragmentation, a protective response that occurs when something is too overwhelming to fully feel at the time it happens.

Soul loss is not mystical in the way it is often portrayed. It is deeply human. When an experience cannot be processed safely, parts of our awareness retreat from conscious presence so the rest of us can survive. Those parts do not disappear. They remain held within the subconscious, the nervous system, and the body’s memory.

Modern psychology mirrors this understanding through parts work, trauma theory, and nervous system regulation. What ancient traditions called the underworld is now understood as the subconscious mind, the shadow, and the somatic landscape where unprocessed experiences live.

Trauma is not stored only as memory. It is held in the body through sensation, posture, breath patterns, emotional responses, and physical symptoms.

This is why insight alone does not always create relief. Healing requires safety, presence, and the gradual integration of what was once too much to feel.

This is not weakness. This is survival intelligence. And when the body senses enough safety, integration can begin naturally.

Trauma softens its hold when a person is gently supported to understand how it has lived within them, through thought and feeling, and through the quiet wisdom of the body.

As sensations, meanings, and responses become more familiar and more able to be named, trauma often shifts from an unseen background force to something that can be met with care, choice, and relational support.

When trauma is approached with awareness, curiosity, and embodied presence, it becomes less something that acts upon a person and more something that can be understood, held, and tended within relationship.

Your past may have taught you how to survive, but it was never meant to dictate how small your life must remain. The patterns you learned were responses, not truths. They protected you once, but they are not vows you have to keep.

Growth often feels like grief because it requires releasing identities that once kept you safe. There is discomfort in choosing differently, in allowing yourself to want more without apology.

That discomfort is not a warning. It is evidence that you are no longer abandoning yourself.

Becoming who you are meant to be is an act of courage long before it feels like freedom.

Here’s a post on what I do when I feel overwhelmed.

Because when I’m overwhelmed, it oftens feel like I’m in a state of struggle.

Like something very dangerous is happening right at this moment too.

So my mind and body starts to go on high alert.

My nervous system full on activated.

Panicking, anxious, overwhelmed.

Something needs to be done.

Right now! But what? I don’t know!

—

Most of us who have never been allowed to feel our feelings will see them as threats.

Threats that show up suddenly, or triggered by someone or something that just happened.

And what do we do?

We react to it, just like we’ve always done.

Fight, flight, freeze, fawn - you know the drill.

—

But here’s the thing, is your reaction actually serving to help make things better?

Or is your reaction something you’ve been conditioned to do for a long time now?

For example, fighting - it might mean we go into overthinking and panic mode

When we freeze, we try our best to distract or numb away our fears.

But what happens to this part of you that carries a very valid fear?

Does it just somehow up and disappear?

Nope, because all we are doing is delaying the inevitable.

That part of you?

That feeling there?

It carries a message desperately needing you to hear.

Go to it.

Turn inward to this part of you instead.

They are activated because there is a very real threat, a very real fear.

And the more we try to get rid of it - the more it pushes back.

Saying to us “why aren’t you listening! Can’t you see this is important?”

So listen.

These parts of you may not know how best to communicate this message to you.

Understandably of course, especially if you’ve been pushing these parts away of yours for years.

But you can learn, we can all learn.

Go in, to that part inside of you that fears.

Listen, just as you would to a small child you hold dear.

And then, only then, will you find true comfort.

Knowing that you’re not alone in this discomfort.

That you have you, and your parts have you.

Never alone, all of you, learning to be connected.

Explaining yourself to a narcissist will never create the understanding, care, or repair you’re hoping for.

It’s not that you’re unclear or asking for too much, it’s that they don’t have the capacity or the willingness to meet you in a shared emotional reality.

The urge to explain is human. It comes from wanting clarity, connection, and fairness. But with a narcissist that instinct gets Weaponized against you. The more you explain, the more they pull you into their distortions, leaving you frustrated, depleted, and doubting your own experience.

The real work is causing long enough to ask yourself: what am I hoping will happen if I explain? Has it ever happened before? And if not, what would it mean to stop trying?

You don’t have to offer explanations to prove your reality or to validate your feelings (they’re already valid in and of themselves). You don’t have to perform clarity for someone who benefits from staying “confused.”

Instead, this is where learning to see the game in action is going to serve you. Because yes, unfortunately you feeling compelled to explain yourself is part of their game. No game is worth playing if you’re guaranteed to lose.

It’s okay if you need to mourn this. There’s a loss baked into this experience. But, after the grief comes the acceptance and this is what allows us to face reality head on.

Many people have learned to blur their worth with other people’s behavior.

When someone pulls away, becomes inconsistent, avoids accountability, or fails to show empathy, it gets interpreted as a personal failure.

Their silence becomes rejection.
Their defensiveness becomes proof that you asked for too much.
Their emotional unavailability becomes evidence that you are not enough.

This is how self-doubt forms.

This is how people end up over-explaining, over-functioning, and working harder in relationships that never become safer.

You start trying to earn empathy, consistency, or reassurance from people who simply do not have the emotional capacity to offer it.

📌And instead of recognizing limitation, you internalize it.

As we move into 2026, we’re separating where you end and where they begin so you stop carrying responsibility for what was never yours to carry.

📌When you strengthen your internal reference point, you stop orienting to people who dysregulate you and start attracting relationships that match your capacity for safety and reciprocity.

As the new year approaches, it is common to feel a mix of frustration and quiet shame.

The sense that you are still in the same place. That certain struggles are still here. That reflection turns into a list of what you do not have or have not figured out yet.

When that feeling shows up, the instinct is often to push harder. To add more self improvement. To fix yourself into a better version.

Wellness culture reinforces this. If you are uncomfortable, the answer is usually framed as more practices, more insight, more discipline.

But for many people, that is not what this moment actually needs. This year, growth may not have looked like breakthroughs or big changes.

It may have looked like learning your limits. Staying regulated in moments that used to overwhelm you. Choosing less when more was costing too much. Treating yourself with more understanding when things stayed complicated.

Those shifts matter. They shape how safe life feels on the inside, even when the outside looks the same.

When you can see yourself clearly and kindly, you have more room to respond instead of react. That is where sustainable change comes from.

Before deciding what needs to change next year, it may be worth acknowledging what it took to get here.

That discomfort you feel can be unsettling. It’s the moment when the old version of you no longer fits, even though it once kept you safe.

The things that once made sense don’t anymore, and that can feel scary. You might miss who you used to be, even while knowing you can’t go back. It can feel lonely and confusing, like walking without a map. But it doesn’t mean you’re lost.

Outgrowing yourself often feels like standing in between who you were and who you’re becoming. It’s awkward and uncomfortable but where the most important changes begin.

When the adrenaline drops.
When the body finally exhales.
When the mind starts scanning for what should’ve gone differently.

That self-criticism often gets mistaken for growth.

But it’s usually just a nervous system trying to regain control by replaying the past.

Integration doesn’t sound like punishment.
It sounds like 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘹𝘵.

It’s learning how to meet yourself 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 with the same steadiness you’re practicing during it.

Not to rewrite the moment.
Not to erase it.

But to let your system learn that it can come back... without attack, collapse, or shame.

This is where capacity actually builds.
Not in the heat of the moment,
but in how you 𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘪𝘳 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧 𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥.

If this landed tenderly, that makes sense.

Nothing here requires fixing or rushing.

You’re not behind.
You’re integrating.

And that counts. 💛

“If I ever stood face to face with my younger self, I’d stay silent.

Words would only get in the way. She’s heard enough words—empty promises, sharp criticisms, whispers that made her feel small. She doesn’t need more.

She already learned the hard way. She already absorbed the world through bruised knees and a tender heart. Anything I could tell her, she’s already living. And she’s doing it with a courage she doesn’t yet recognize.

I’d wrap my arms around her and let her feel safe, even if only for a moment.
Let her shoulders drop. Let her breathe without guarding her heart. Let her be held without wondering what it will cost her. She deserved that then. She still does now.

That little girl carried more than she should have. She lived through pain that could have shattered most people.

But it didn’t shatter her. It sculpted her. Carved out depths where empathy now lives. Hardened places into strength. Left scars that she would later learn to speak through.

And yet, she kept her heart. She kept her strength.

She didn’t turn cold. She didn’t become cruel. However quietly, however fiercely—she loved anyway. She hoped anyway. She showed up, again and again, even when showing up felt like walking into the wind.

She grew into someone resilient, compassionate, and real.
Not perfect. Not untouched. But true. A woman who knows how to hold space for others because she once needed someone to hold it for her. A woman who recognizes strength because she had to dig for her own.

And that alone makes everything she survived mean something.
It wasn’t for nothing. It was for her. For the person she became.

And if I could, I’d tell her without saying a word—that I am proud to be her future.

That she was worth every hard day.
That she still is.”

It’s not just you - conflict is hard.
It’s messy.
It’s vulnerable.

I recently watched the show “Man on the Inside,” and there was a vulnerable conversation between a father and his adult daughter as they were learning how to relate to one another, after his wife/her mother died.

They weren’t used to relating without the wife/mom as intermediary.

The father kept saying that he wasn’t good at these types of conversations, and the daughter responded by saying something like, “I’m not sure it’s about being ‘good’ at it. I think there are people who have hard conversations, and there are people who don’t. I’m just glad that we’re willing to be the type that are.”

And I fully agree with this - conflict is about our edges, our needs, and our vulnerabilities bumping up against each other. It’s inherently difficult and exposing.

It brings up our self-protective impulses. And so I think it’s less important to think about being “good” at it, and more important to think about how to present within it.

In my relationships, phrases like the one in the image have been so important - to acknowledge that, yes, this is hard. And I really appreciate you being willing to sit in the hard with me.
As I often talk about, we all need to be seen and validated.

We all want to feel like our feelings make sense and are okay to feel.
This is one way to remind both parties that the hard IS real, and to extend appreciation for continuing to show up within it.

There is no way out but through.
And I appreciate all of you who are willing to do the deeper self awareness and emotional self management work so that you can show up more fully and compassionately in your interpersonal conflicts so that you can learn more about yourselves and the people you care about.

Does today feel strange? It’s suddenly too quiet, slow, or even lonely? This might be why...

After weeks of emotional highs, family dynamics, and sensory overload, your nervous system has been running on overdrive. When the stimulation suddenly stops, the absence of chaos can feel unsettling.

This happens because your brain doesn’t register calm as a good thing, but as something new. And new, unfortuntely, isn’t always safe.

If you grew up around unpredictability, calm likely meant just waiting for the next eruption. So your body learned to brace for it, even when it never comes.

And while some people assume healing takes avoiding stress, the reality is your body needs to learn that safety doesn’t have to come with tension.

If you’re struggling to let your body finally rest today, try to start small. Stretch a little, go for a walk, or listen to an audiobook.

While your body wants to search for something to fill this time, your nervous system needs new experiences of calm to build trust that it’s safe.
