Have to share this one because I do bump into the $Have to share this one because I do bump into the fallacy of “choice” … Repost from @iamthaissky • While it may sound empowering to say that emotions are a choice and that we get to decide how we feel, the reality of how our minds work tells a different story. Neurobiologically, external stimuli reach the emotional centers of the brain before they reach the prefrontal cortex, the part responsible for reasoning and reflection. This means that, more often than not, we are feeling before we are thinking. Emotion arises prior to conscious interpretation, making it impossible to simply “choose” our way out of it. To deny this reality, to force ourselves not to feel, to ignore or suppress emotions, is a form of self-gaslighting. It fractures our ability to engage with our inner world honestly and diminishes our capacity to integrate and heal. That said, we are not helpless in the face of emotion. And healing is not about being forever consumed by what we feel. Where choice does exist is in how we relate to our emotions… whether we engage them with curiosity or with avoidance, whether we tend to them or dismiss them, whether we allow them to inform us or dictate our actions. Because emotions are data, not directives. They do not tell us what is objectively true, but rather, how we are perceiving what is happening. And that distinction is crucial. The more we create space to observe, process, and metabolize our emotions, the more agency we have in our responses. It is in this space (between emotion and action) that we reclaim our ability to shape our lives with intention. __ #choice #hope #curiosity #intention #emotions #helpless #agency #space$
