There is a growing belief that women need more anger.

But anger is often what emerges when the body has been carrying too much for too long.

One of the most overlooked aspects of female physiology is its receptivity.

Women take in enormous amounts of information from their environment.

For most of human history, the continuation of life depended on it.

But every system that receives must also release.

Every cell has a membrane. Every ecosystem has a boundary. Every living thing survives through its ability to discern what belongs and what does not.

The same is true for women.

And this is where grief comes in.
Grief is the immune system of the soul.
It is the process of separation. Of release.
Of putting down what was never ours to carry forever.

What is mine. What is yours. What stays. What leaves. Without grief, the body continues to hold.

Eventually the boundary system begins to suffer because no living system was designed to receive endlessly without release.

This is why grief is sacred.

Because grief restores the boundary between self and other.

And something profound happens when a woman fully grieves.

A rite of passage occurs.

The woman who emerges is no longer willing to carry what is not hers.

No longer willing to betray herself for belonging.

No longer willing to abandon her needs to maintain the comfort of others.

Her boundaries become clear.

Her life becomes clear.

Her no becomes clear.

This is why grief has always been honored in traditional cultures.

Because grief does not simply help us let go of the past.

It changes what we are willing to tolerate in the future.

One of the most common ways people stay in painful relationships is by confusing good intentions with healthy behavior.

They tell themselves, “They didn’t mean it,” as though intent alone should erase the emotional impact.

But your nervous system doesn’t respond to intentions, it responds to experiences.

If someone’s words or actions repeatedly leave you feeling dismissed, unsafe, or emotionally unseen, those effects are real regardless of what they claim they meant.

Intent may explain behavior, but it doesn’t automatically repair the wound it created.

Respect is revealed in what happens after someone learns they’ve hurt you. A person who respects you doesn’t make your pain responsible for protecting their self-image.

Instead of immediately defending themselves, explaining why you “shouldn’t” feel hurt, or insisting you misunderstood them, they’re willing to become curious about your experience.

At last month’s 37th Annual Boston International Trauma Conference, I spoke about why trauma healing is less about arriving at some permanently healed state and more about learning how to rise differently when old patterns get stirred up.

I think that expectation matters. If people enter healing work believing they should eventually become untouchable, then every trigger can start to feel like failure. But healing often looks more like capacity building over time.

After we do a piece of work, new behaviors can begin to emerge.

We may recover quicker. We may have a little more space to respond instead of react. Boundaries may feel easier to set. Speaking up may still bring fear, but it becomes easier to follow through anyway.

That’s part of what healing gives us: not a life where nothing ever touches us, but a growing ability to meet those moments differently.

This is a gentle reminder that figuring out why someone might⁠
be abusive doesn’t keep you safe or change things. The change is ⁠

As childhood trauma survivors, our inner child struggles with the reality that someone is bad for us. This is a function of our codependency. As small children, we rooted for abusive or unprotective parents. We had hope, and it’s still a problem.⁠

If we know they struggle with a mental health issue, we become more compassionate, which means we might still subject ourselves to abuse.⁠
⁠
Our inner child needs help reclaiming that not everyone is for us. Some people don’t deserve a second chance, or even a first one.⁠
⁠
What matters most is your peace, safety, and dignity.⁠
⁠
Am I saying everyone with mental health issues should be shunned or deserve the stigma? Of course not!⁠

I caught myself recently again.

Being tired.

And knowing I’m tired.

But still somehow finding yet another thing to do.

This past weekend,I spent almost the entire weekend writing a book.

Not just a book in fact, but three books at the same time.

A book on Borderline Personality Disorder and Complex Trauma because it’s something deeply important to me.

Another on AuDHD for my clients (and tbh myself too, can you guess?)

And a little short story fiction I’ve been working on for a while called “a map of vanishing places”.

And to be fair, I enjoyed all of these.

But again, that’s the tricky part, right?

Sometimes the things that tire us are not even things we hate.

Sometimes they are meaningful.
Interesting.
Even exciting.

But still,
they take something from us.

Time. Energy. Space.

And I guess I’m asking myself this tonight:

Why is it so hard to slow the pace?

Why is rest so hard to simply embrace?

And not something we need to constantly negotiate?

Tbh, I don’t have a clean answer tonight.

Maybe I’m just realising now that rest is not something I need to collapse into.

But something I want to choose.

—

And don’t get me wrong, this post is part of my rest too.

I’m writing to get my thoughts of my chest (this is my journal)

But after this I’m also going to go read my Manga (bet you didn’t know this about me)

Eat my Japanese curry katsu don.

Stroke and smell both my dogs.

Then dim the lights and lay in bed.

Because rest is not the absence of life.

Rest is part of being fully alive too.

Rewriting the story serves a function: it allows them to preserve a sense of themselves as “right” or “good” by casting the other person as the problem, while also maintaining a sense of control over how the situation is understood by others.

Although this can feel deeply personal, it is often less about the truth of who you are and more about how they are trying to manage internal emotional discomfort.

When someone distorts your character or rewrites what happened after you set boundaries, it can be painful, but it usually reflects their internal struggle rather than your reality.

Their version of events is often shaped by what they can tolerate emotionally, not by an objective account of what actually occurred.

I think one of the most painful beliefs people with Complex PTSD carry is this idea that one day we’ll finally be done.

Done grieving.

Done hurting.

Done getting triggered.

Done feeling afraid.

And when that day doesn’t come, we assume we’re failing.

But what if healing was never supposed to look like arriving?

What if healing is simply movement?

Getting out of bed when you wanted to disappear.

Pausing before you apologize for something that wasn’t your fault.

Taking one breath before sending the text.

Setting one boundary.

Telling yourself the truth for three whole seconds.

Those moments matter.

They all count.

Healing is not one big thing. It’s thousands of little things that slowly change the direction of your life.

And if you’re tired, I understand. You have every right to be.

But sometimes the greatest relief comes when you realize that even the smallest step forward still counts as forward.

That is the work.

That is the miracle.

That is healing.

You are allowed to learn about your patterns without using them as evidence that you are broken.

You are allowed to meet your wounds without making your whole life revolve around fixing them.

And you are allowed to go slowly enough that your healing journey becomes a place of return, not another place where you reject yourself.

Healing does not mean that one day you arrive at a perfect healing destination where you are never triggered, never afraid, never overwhelmed, never ashamed, and never touched by old wounds again.

Healing is developing a different relationship with yourself and your inner experience, where pain can be met with presence and authentic messiness, and aliveness is no longer postponed until some perfect version of you finally arrives.

I grew up in a home where the people who loved me were also the ones who hurt me. My father chased me through the house and hit me - but he wasn’t all bad. There were real moments of joy and love between us, which is exactly what makes it so confusing for a kid.

And my mother, who loved me, didn’t protect me. So I learned love early, but I also learned it doesn’t come with safety.

When you grow up like that, your body can’t separate love from fear. They get wired together. And that wiring doesn’t stay in childhood - it shapes who you’re drawn to, and what you come to call love.

Years later, it might shape what love even feels like to you. Anxiety can start to feel like falling for someone, while calm doesn’t register as love yet - it just registers as nothing.

When someone is consistently kind, part of you might keep waiting for the catch, because love always came with one.

And the one who runs hot then cold can feel like the real thing, because the push and pull is what love has always felt like.

This isn’t a flaw, and it isn’t your “type.” It’s what you learned, and it can be unlearned.

I know, because I had to heal enough of my own history before I could let something healthier in – and I wasn’t “done” when I did. It’s not quick, and it usually takes help.

But over time, your nervous system can begin to learn that love doesn’t have to hurt to be real.

Here’s what’s actually happening beneath all of it.

When something painful happened, and your mind didn’t have a way to process it, it created an exit. A way out of the feeling. And that exit worked. So then the discomfort became manageable for you and the situation felt survivable in the moment. So your brain filed that strategy away as: “this works. So use it again”.

So it did. And it still does.

Staying busy is often a sophisticated avoidance of what surfaces the moment the noise stops: grief, loneliness, a feeling of emptiness that has no name yet.

Humor and deflection isn’t just having a fun personality. For many people it’s armor keeping relationships close enough to feel connected, but light enough to stay safe from being truly known.

Controlling your environment isn’t making everything perfect. It’s often the only way someone knows how to regulate an internal world that feels permanently on the edge of chaos.

Caretaking everyone else is sometimes the most socially acceptable way to avoid sitting with your own needs, which at some point became too dangerous, too much, or too pointless to acknowledge. So you get to feel through others.

Numbing yourself is what your nervous system learned was the fastest way to get relief from a feeling it was never taught how to move through.

None of these are permanent. But none of them can shift until you can see them clearly and without the shame that makes you want to look away.

The goal isn’t to strip away every defense you’ve ever built. It’s to develop enough awareness that you get to choose, consciously, deliberately, whether the strategy still serves the life you’re trying to build. Or whether it’s quietly keeping you from it.

Talking to someone can help. A friend. A professional therapist. Learning how to do the inner work and heal your traum

Shame is rarely a feeling on its own. It’s usually a cover for something more vulnerable underneath. When an event triggers shame, it’s worth pausing to ask what’s actually being protected.

Six feelings that often hide beneath shame:
fear of being found out or left, anger turned inward at yourself, sadness for the part of you that got hurt, disgust directed at your own behavior or body, loneliness that makes you want to withdraw right when you need connection most, and powerlessness the sense that the moment can’t be undone.

Next time shame shows up, try getting curious instead of disappearing.
Ask: what is this actually protecting me from feeling?

That question is where the shift starts.

One moment of shame in childhood can shape decisions you’re making decades later in situations that have nothing to do with what actually happened.

That’s what makes shame so different from guilt. Guilt is specific. It says “I made a mistake.” It stays connected to the event, and it fades when the event is resolved. Shame doesn’t stay where it started. Shame says “I am the mistake” and once it’s about your identity rather than your behavior, it stops needing a reason to show up. It just needs a feeling that resembles the original one.

So a kid who got laughed at for raising their hand becomes an adult who stays quiet in every room, even ones full of people who would have listened.

A kid whose tears were met with anger becomes an adult who apologizes for crying at their own father’s funeral.

A kid teased once about their body becomes an adult who avoids mirrors, cameras, and intimacy for thirty years long after that comment, and the person who made it, are both irrelevant.

Your nervous system archives sensations: the heat in your face, the tightness in your throat, the urge to disappear.

So anytime life recreates that sensation, even faintly, your body responds as if the original moment of shame is happening to you all over again.

This is why a small comment from a coworker can wreck your whole week. Why being mildly corrected can make you want to crawl out of your skin. It’s not really about the coworker, or the correction. It’s about every other time that exact feeling showed up and what you learned about yourself because of it.

Psychologists recognize intuition as a non-analytical thought process that often occurs outside our conscious awareness.

Intuition is our ability to piece together subtle information, patterns, and emotional impressions to form a sense about a situation or person. It’s the process of arriving at a conclusion without consciously knowing how you got there.

How many times have you ignored that inner nudge to realize later your intuition was right all along? My guess is more often than not. It’s remarkable how we can pick up on things before we can explain them. We might walk into a room and immediately sense tension, or leave a conversation feeling that something isn’t quite genuine.

Maybe we’re responding to subtle cues such as body language, tone of voice, facial expressions, or inconsistencies in behavior. Or perhaps we’re simply perceiving the overall energy of a situation. Whatever the mechanism, intuition can be a valuable guide. It helps us stay aligned with our goals, avoid unnecessary harm, and recognize whether a relationship, opportunity, or environment supports the direction we want to take.

Trusting your intuition is an act of self-care, while ignoring it is self-betrayal, because it means overriding important information your mind and body are trying to communicate. The challenge, however, is learning to distinguish intuition from fear, trauma, or emotional wounds. My second book, Healing Is the New High, explores this distinction in greater depth. Self-awareness is key.

The law of polarity helps us understand one end of a spectrum through its opposite. Duality is a feature of the physical world that helps us make sense of our experiences through contrast. We may not be able to identify the exact point where “hot” becomes “cold,” but we understand each because we’ve experienced both.

In the same way, by knowing authenticity, loyalty, and integrity, we’re better able to recognize inauthenticity, betrayal, and manipulation when they appear. When those signals arise, it’s not only acceptable but often necessary to step away in order to protect your time, energy, and well-being.

Have you ever heard the expression, “new level, new devil?”

That’s what it means when you feel like you’ve gotten comfortable at your current stage of life, so you begin stepping into your next dream or goal and are met with insecurity, doubt, fear, and discomfort all over again.

It can feel really uncomfortable and even frustrating —
“I’ve already dealt with this!”
But with each new level of growth, comes new challenges.

New stretches. New things to learn, to develop a relationship with, and new boundaries to explore.

These feelings of discomfort and doubt don’t necessarily mean it’s not for you —
They might be a mirror showing you where you have some expansion work to do.
Can you let yourself be seen?
Can you let the light in?
Can you soften your guard and play in the present and just see what happens?

Give yourself time and support. You’ll get there.

Sustained self-analysis and comparison can become psychically expensive.

I’ve been reflecting on an idea from Self Psychology: the reconstruction of the self requires spaces where the self is exempt from the demand to perform, evaluate, compare, or constantly “work on itself.” It needs privacy. It also needs respite from continuous self-analysis so experience can distill into integration — and that often only happens by living.

I sometimes wonder whether constant immersion in self-help and psychological content truly serves the psyche.

Is the psyche meant to exist in a near-continuous state of self-observation through endless posts, videos, analyses, and material that constantly turn us inward?

The irony is not lost on me that this page itself generates depth psychological material. It is partly why I try to be mindful here and why I do not post every day. I believe the psyche needs space between encounters.

Even neurobiologically, sustained meta-awareness is costly. Constant self-monitoring can increase anxiety, hypervigilance, and mental fatigue for some.

The goal of depth work is not endless self-focus. In many ways, it is to return more fully to life rather than endlessly observing ourselves living it.

Perhaps one shadow side of widespread psychological knowledge is that we no longer simply experience life — we monitor ourselves experiencing it.

The psyche evolved through rhythm:
awareness, then digestion.
Introspection, then participation.

Much of integration happens outside of analysis:
in walking, cooking, novels, relationships, beauty, nature, and silence 😊

It is incredibly exhausting to defend your parenting choices to people who only see your child from the outside. Everyone has advice on how you should raise your kids, but if the commentary isn’t built with the unique needs of your specific child in mind, it simply doesn’t carry weight.

You can listen to outside perspectives, but you are the only one who gets to decide if it actually works for your home. Because the truth is, no one beyond your walls understands the raw materials you are actually working with better than you do.

No two children are built the same way, and they do not require the exact same handling — even when they grow up under the very same roof. Just because one child can breeze through a transition, handle a loud room, or sit still without missing a beat, it does not mean the other one should automatically be able to do the same. They are entirely separate human beings, moving on completely different timelines.

Tuning out the critics isn’t an excuse to let your boundaries slide or pretend that difficult behaviors don’t matter. This is about common sense and real protection.

Our primary role is to understand the specific child standing right in front of us, and to adjust our posture to give them exactly what THEY need to stay steady.

When we stop trying to force them onto a generic timeline just to please the people watching, the underlying tension drops.

We bring a quiet certainty back into the house, knowing without a doubt that supporting our child’s actual growth matters infinitely more than keeping up appearances for the village. ❤️

Somewhere in every heart there is a discerning voice.

This voice distrusts the status quo. It sounds out the falsity in things and encourages dissent from the images things tend to assume.

It underlines the secret crevices where the surface has become strained. It advises distance and opens up a new perspective through which the concealed meaning of a situation might emerge.

The inner voice makes any complicity uneasy. Its intention is to keep the heart clean and clear.

This voice is an inner whisper not obvious or known to others outside. It receives little attention and is not usually highlighted among a person’s qualities.

Yet so much depends on that small voice. The truth of its whisper marks the line between honor and egoism, kindness and chaos.

In extreme situations, which have been emptied of all shelter and tenderness, that small voice whispers from somewhere beyond and encourages the heart to hold out for dignity, respect, beauty and love.

Those of us who have experienced trauma know there

Those of us who have experienced trauma know there is a kind of embodied knowing that rises from deeper within.

It is a sensing of that which is unspoken, the felt knowing that, even when it cannot be seen, the heat is rising and the smoke is gathering around us. Parts of us bracing and scanning, planning for the knowing to unfold.

For many of us, this knowing was formed in a place where the fires forever burned relentlessly and unpredictably. Yet even as they burned, they remained invisible to those who were meant to protect us from the flames.

And so our bodies learned to register danger long before others, and long after others denied it. We learned to sense it, to perceive it early, to stay readied, and to adapt, in any form possible, toward Self-protection.

This is the alarmed aloneness. The valid embodiment to the fire that was real all along.

Perhaps part of what we need now is recognition and accompaniment.

Recognition of what was and is near and here.

Recognition that something in us has been telling the truth all along.

And an accompaniment in our truth that opens space for us to know we can trust our bodies.

An accompaniment that shares in what is real and true for us, no matter what others feel.

The alarm made sense. The alarm makes sense.

Only this time, we no longer have to be alone in it.

Though this is interesting, its important to remember the impact of complex and developmental trauma - in many cases worry is not just worry, and uncertainty travels deeper than ordinary unresolved.

For many of us, unresolve and uncertainty is terrifying - younger parts of us left alarmed and alone in fragmenting fear. We were, often we still can be, vulnerable and unprotected. And in these moments what we need now is steady, predictable, reliable relationship where we are gently held in our fear, in our terror without expectation to change or move. This is where therapy can provide the needed space where you nonlinear have to be alone in the terror of unpredictably and uncertainty - where what is unresolved can be nurtured and respected for what it is. Moment-by-moment.

It looks for information that might close the loop.   fMRI research shows this activates the amygdalae even when no real danger is present.   Worry feels like problem-solving but research shows it functions more like avoidance and keeps the cycle running.   Thirty years of research on intolerance of uncertainty point consistently in one direction: learning to sit with uncertainty, rather than trying to resolve it, is what actually reduces the loop over time.

Neuronormativity is often invisible to the people who benefit from it.

Many of the things we consider “normal” are actually preferences, expectations, and social conventions that have been elevated to the status of rules.

The expectation to make eye contact, sit still, communicate in particular ways, work at a consistent pace, tolerate sensory discomfort, or prioritise independence are not neutral standards. They reflect a particular way of experiencing and navigating the world.

When neurodivergent people diverge from these expectations, the burden is often placed on them to adapt, mask, or overcome their differences.

But what if we shifted the question?

What if, instead of asking neurodivergent people to constantly adjust themselves, we examined the assumptions embedded within our schools, workplaces, healthcare systems, and communities?

Recognising neuronormativity isn’t about creating division between neurotypical and neurodivergent people.

It’s about noticing the invisible rules that shape our understanding of what is considered “acceptable,” “appropriate,” or “normal” and creating space for a broader range of human experiences to belong.

Different is not the same as wrong!
