Milieu refers to the physical, relational, social, cultural, and environmental setting within which something occurs, develops, and takes shape.
More specifically, milieu refers to the atmosphere and contextual conditions of home, neighbourhood, school, workplace, community, and wider sociocultural and intergenerational life. It is the surrounding context within which the Self comes to sense, perceive, interpret, adapt, and organise. In this way, milieu shapes the unfolding of experience, influencing development, personality, adjustment, and ways of being within Self, Other(s), and the World around us.
