Tending to the Other

Busy tending to the Other

When did someone last notice the thirst within your own roots?

Caregiving so often begins as a way of staying close. For a youngling whose needs meet withdrawal, inconsistency, or alarm, attending to the needs of an Other becomes the surest path toward orientation, proximity, and attachment, a protective pattern formed in service of survival and belonging.

Over time our systems learn to seek and sense the moods of those around us long before our own wilting comes into view.

Turning the watering can toward ourSelf can feel unfamiliar, even uncomfortable, especially where reaching inward is so rarely met. Yet, beneath all the doing, there remains an alive longing to be valued, received, and known.

It reaches for an Other, a someone steady enough to notice what has wilted and to stay alongside us as it begins to lift toward the light again.

Perhaps this weekend there may be a moment, however small, to pause, to turn thewatering cans spout toward the pot that bears the name of the one worth tending to too: the pot that bears your own name.
