Understanding Hate

Understanding hate

Dr Henry Cloud writes that hate is a part of what defines us and as such we need to understand hate. And while at first it seems a notion to be weary of, I resonate with the concept and believe it really does.

Dr Cloud goes on to remind us that when we love something, we value it, and so when we love something it gives others a window into our souls.

So too is the same with hate. “What would you think, for example, about a person who said that they hate the follow things: arrogance, lying, innocent people being hurt, harmful schemes, evil practices, telling lies about others, and things that stir up dissension among people?

If a person said that they hated those things, and their life demonstrated the truth of those claims, wouldn’t you be inclined to like that person? “

Could it be that which shows others our values is a key to connection, and opportunities for compassionate communication?

I do want to distinguish though, while we all have a certain level of hate for somethings in this world, hate is generally an entity that arises form fear, anger, violation, or a sense of injury. Therefore, it is important to ensure hate is not directed at others, rather that we use it together to instigate change.
